Stage 1 of the Volkswagen R Gravelbike Experience consists of 3 countries in the first stage. From Techendorf, the starts along Lake Weissensee to the first small climb up to the Kreuzbergsattel. The route then leads through the beautiful Gitschtal valley amidst the mountains of the Carnic Alps, mostly downhill to Hermagor. From there, the route follows the River Gail to Feistritz. Here the first long climb of the day up to the Bartolo saddle awaits.
The Bartolo saddle also marks the border with Italy and the 7 kilometer and 600 meter ascent is challenging but relatively pleasant. From the Bartolo saddle, the route then descends to Tarvisio and from there climbs slightly again to Lake Predil.

Stage 2

Tolmin (SLO)
The Stage 2 light of the Volkswagen R Gravelbike Experience is completely within Slovenia. The characteristics of this route are quickly explained as 2 long climbs and 2 beautiful descents in the unique Soca Valley.
The route leads from Bovec around 8 kilometers downhill along the Soca. This is immediately followed by the longest ascent of this year’s tour with 13 kilometers and over 1,000 meters of ascent up to Monte Stol. From there, the route descends along old military roads on open terrain towards Kobarid.
From Kobarid, the route then heads mostly downstream towards the stage finish in Tolmin. But before reaching it, the route climbs another 350 meters and the last few kilometers then lead to the finish on a beautiful gravel road.

Stage 3
Tolmin (SLO)
→
Grado (ITA)
It’s off to the sea at the end of this year’s Volkswagen R Gravelbike Experience. But at the beginning of the final stage, there are still plenty of meters of altitude to cover.
The first ascent of 750 meters and almost 8 kilometers is the benchmark of this stage. Directly from Tolmin, the route climbs towards Kolovrat, where we reach the highest point of this stage. The route then follows a beautiful mountain ridge on lonely roads and varied gravel sections down to Italy. Now it gets flatter and the vineyards of Slovenia and Italy give us a bit of a Tuscan feeling.
As soon as we have left the vineyards behind us, we ride through the Isonzo Delta towards the finish in Grado. The last 50 kilometers are flat and perfect for loosening up the legs after the exertions of the last few days. The finish in Grado by the sea is of course the perfect end.
Highlights
- Alpine panorama and the sea
- Tuscany feeling in the Slovenian and Italian vineyards
- Arrival in Grado on the Adriatic coast
